SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 (2022) Dir: Jeff Fowler ⭐️⭐️⭐️ In this sequel we find Sonic (Ben Schwartz) settled into his life with Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) Wachowski, and moonlighting at night as inept superhero Blue Justice. When Tom and Maddie head to Hawaii for the wedding of her sister Rachel (Natasha Rothwell), Sonic is given the responsibility of being head of the house. His new found status is soon challenged by the return of Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his new partner in crime Knuckles (Idris Elba) who are on a quest for the chaos emerald. Sonic along with his new bestie Miles (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) team up to stop the dastardly duo from using the emerald for their evil purposes. Much like the original this is another fun ride with blockbuster effects but aimed at a younger audience than the Marvel crowd. Ben 'Jean-Ralphio' Swartz imbues Sonic with enough charm, wisecracks and pop culture reference to keep the pace cracking along. Jim Carrey embraces a return to his OTT scenery chewing roots in another humourous turn as Robotnik while rocking a brand new on-brand 'stache and even adding the odd throwaway political one liner for the adults in the crowd. Marsden and Sumpter are convincing enough considering a fair chunk of their scenes would involve conversating with a pre-CGI rendered tennis ball on a stick. Idris Elba is suitably badass if a little confused with modern technology such as 'texting'. Natasha Rothwell is the surprise package as Rachel, I briefly remember her character from the first film but she really shines here in full Bridezilla mode. Surely in Sonic 3 we see Rachel entangled in a romantic relationship with a now reformed Dr Robotnik? Sonic sitting arms crossed and sulking at the dinner table while Robotnik charms his way into the family with one crazy anecdote after another. Call me Hollywood...my services are cheap! The action sequences throw in plenty of Easter eggs for the fans with recreations of the biplane sky chase and ancient ruin levels - and there is a fantastic snowboard pursuit scene which has a resolution you won't see coming. When we originally saw lthis Marli had a good time, laughed at the jokes and said it is 'maybe' her favourite film. Stick around for the mid credits sequence.
